House Fires

Residential fires in Cape Town rose by 20% over the past 12 months. Although fatalities have decreased, the data still highlights the importance of staying vigilant during late night hours & weekends.

The Fire & Rescue Service reported 4210 residential fires in 2023/24, leading to 220 fatalities. Informal residential fires saw a 15% increase year on year, while formal residential fires rose by 27%.

The rise in residential fires highlights the necessity for stronger education, awareness & discussions about fire risks.

The City has made significant efforts to maintain a well functioning Fire & Rescue Service capable of responding effectively to fires. However, ensuring fire safety at home, ultimately requires planning & commitment from everyone living
under the same roof.
